If you’re a die-hard NBA fan, you must have heard of Alejandra Amarilla at one point. Who doesn’t know Steve Nash’s ex-wife? Many people, actually, but I’m here to fix that!

Let’s start from the very beginning.

Amarilla was born in 1974 in Paraguay City. After finishing high school, she attended the Universidad Americana de Paraguay, majoring in marketing and advertising.

Although she seems to have had a normal childhood, her early life was more intriguing than you think. You see, Amarilla’s father worked in the United Nations.

That means he traveled often and took Amarilla with him. We’ve all seen movies. We know how hard that can be for a child. It feels like they don’t have a place to call home.

Amarilla didn’t take it that way, though. She loved traveling and experiencing different cultures. So, it wasn’t as bad as you might think.

As someone who studied marketing in college, what career path do you think Amarilla would pursue? Filmmaking! Duh!

We all know that making movies is no walk in the park, but Amarilla puts in the time and effort. Her stories were always powerful, heart-warming, and well-delivered.

However, she didn’t want to make fictional movies and was more interested in tackling real life with all its beauty, challenges, and hardships.

Her first project was a short documentary called Unleashing Creativity (2009). As the name suggests, it tackled the transformative power of art, whether it’s painting, music, dancing, etc.

Although the movie didn’t receive any official evaluations, it was a strong start for Amarilla and helped her gain enough momentum for her following project.

Landfill Harmonic (2015) was a big step for her, with its heartfelt story and top-notch execution. The movie follows the story of a group of children who wanted to learn music but couldn’t afford to buy instruments.

So, they went to a garbage slum in Paraguay, made their instruments with trash, and created a recycled orchestra. Their story eventually fell on the right ears, and they toured the world, playing their music in concerts.

As you can see, it’s a story about passion, perseverance, and art. Amarilla wanted to raise awareness of the dire state of that orchestra, and she succeeded in that.

The movie raised $214,000 and was featured on CNN, Fox News, NPR, 60 Minutes, and more.

Despite not majoring in filmmaking, Amarilla ultimately told human stories with genuine emotions and struggles. Isn’t that what movies are all about?

No one can deny that Steve Nash is one of the NBA’s most talented point guards. How did he reach that point in his career, though? Let’s take a look.

Early Basketball Life

Steve Nash

Nash started playing basketball in high school. Believe it or not, the man dominated the court from the beginning of his career.

He single-handedly won his team the British Columbia AAA provincial championship title as a senior. That was only the beginning, though.

Nash’s basketball journey in college was much more glamorous. Santa Clara offered The former point guard a scholarship, playing in the 1992-93 NCAA tournament.

Although the Broncos didn’t win that contest, Nash made quite the impact. Two years later, he led his team through the NCAA tournament, finally securing the top spot for the first time in years.

During his time in Santa Clara, Nash won the Conference Player of the Year title twice and got to train with professional NBA players like Gary Payton and Jason Kidd.

Eventually, he graduated with the highest record in assists, free throws, and three-pointers. The guy wasn’t messing around.

Professional Basketball Career

Professional Basketball Career

With such a celebrated high school and college basketball career, it wasn’t long before Nash got scouted. Despite his talent, he didn’t have the smoothest start in the NBA.

Phoenix Suns

Nash’s first appearance in a professional NBA court was with the Phoenix Suns. Unlike his college and high school teams, though, he didn’t influence this one much.

He was an unknown player to the team’s fans, so he kept getting booed every time he stepped on the court. The longest court time he had was around 10 minutes.

Although he kept improving and getting more court time, he was still a dispensable player. So, it was no surprise to anyone when the Suns traded him to the Dallas Mavericks for Bubba Wells and Martin Müürsepp.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks gave Nash the space he needed to shine and bring his A-game, achieving high scores in points and assists. It also helped that he played with some of the best NBA players then, like Juwan Howard and Michael Finley.

You know what they say: Competition can bring out the best in you, and that’s what it did for Nash. He won a golden ticket to the NBA All-Star Game in only three years and earned a spot in the All-NBA Third Team.

Nash reached a whole new league during his time with the Mavericks, and he didn’t stop there.

Los Angeles Lakers

Nash joined the Los Angeles Lakers during his 17th season in the NBA. So, you might think he was established enough to make an impact right from the beginning. Well, that didn’t happen.

In his second game with the team, Nash fractured his left leg after colliding with Damian Lillard. Talk about a rough start.

Eventually, though, he returned and continued to be a beast, scoring, assisting, and wowing everyone with his skills. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long.

You see, Nash kept getting injured during his time with the Lakers, which led to him experiencing insufferable nerve damage. He also had back problems before he joined.

He knew it was time to throw the towel. So, on 21 March 2015, Steve Nash decided to retire from basketball with his Laker jersey.

Alejandra Amarilla and Steve Nash’s Marriage

Amarilla met Nash in New York City in 2001 when he was still with the Dallas Mavericks. The couple quickly hit it off and started dating.

Although the fans knew little about their relationship, everything was going well. They even welcomed their twin daughters in 2004.

Not long afterward, Amarilla and Nash decided to get married. Everyone thought their marriage would only bring them closer together.

And it did—to an extent. The couple had their third child, Matteo Joel, in 2010. Unfortunately, that closeness didn’t last long.

Alejandra Amarilla and Steve Nash’s Divorce

Yes, Steve Nash’s marriage wasn’t as successful as his basketball career. In 2010, the famous point guard announced his separation from Alejandra Amarilla.

At first glance, that may not sound like a big deal. Countless marriages end in divorce. Yes, but the problem isn’t with the marriage ending. It’s with how it ended.

Nash announced his separation on the day his wife gave birth to Matteo. Suspicious. Who would be cruel enough to do that? And why?

No one knows for sure. However, rumor is that Amarilla had an affair with Nash’s teammate, Jackson Richardson. Rumor claims that Richardson was Matteo’s birth father.

You might think these are mere allegations, but hear me out. Immediately after that rumor spread, the Phoenix Suns sent Richardson to Orlando Magic. Coincidence?

Anyway, the custody battle between Nash and Amarilla was long and hard, but both parties chose to keep the details of the legal dispute secret. Now, both parties have moved on and are living life separately.

In September 2016, Steve Nash married former US volleyball player Lilla Frederick, and they have two children together.

Final Thoughts

Most people know Alejandra Amarilla as Steve Nash’s ex-wife. She’s an established filmmaker who lived a celebrated life outside her marriage.

The divorce is just one of those hiccups the protagonist faces at one point in the plot. Amarilla will eventually write a proper ending to her story.
