Early Life and Troubled Teenage Years
Reading about Bridman’s life broke my heart as, sadly, his life was marked by trouble and instability since he was a child.
To start, his real name is Bryan Christopher Brooks, and he was born on February 15, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
At the time of his birth, his father, Johnnie William, didn’t sign Bryan’s birth certificate. As a result, Bryan took his mother’s, Gladys Brooks, last name.

Oddly enough, he also didn’t have a first name for the entire first month of his life! His parents simply referred to him as the baby, a nickname that stuck with him into adulthood.
When Bryan’s mother was murdered when he was just two years old, he and his siblings moved with their uncle for two years in British Columbia, Canada.
Once they returned to New Orleans, they lived in foster care for about two years. Later, when their dad found out he fought to get the kids back.
After a long legal battle, he finally won, gaining full custody of the kids and changing Bryan’s name to Bryan Williams as it should’ve been from the beginning.
Trouble as a Teenager
The kids moved with their dad and stepmom in the Magnolia Projects in Central City. During his time there, Bryan befriended his step-brother, Eldrick Wise.

The two caused a lot of trouble together, from robberies to selling drugs. Bryan was arrested once at 16 and again at 18 and was sentenced to three years in a correctional center. He only served 18 months before he was acquitted.

Bryan’s life took a completely different turn after getting out of prison. A new subgenre of hip-hop was rising, and it caught his attention, along with that of his brother, Ronald “Slim” Williams.

So, Bryan had the amazing idea to start their own label, “Cash Money Records” and recruit emerging artists.
The brothers started their hunt looking for fresh talent, and convinced DJ Mannie Fresh, a local DJ, to become the label’s in-house producer.
The label started getting more popular and gaining a large fanbase in New Orleans and surrounding areas.
Naturally, they struggled for a while with financial issues and the death of many of their artists.
However, it was this label that signed 11-year-old Dawyne Carter and 14-year-old Christopher Dorsey. Both would later be known as Lil Wayne B.G.!
In 1997, the label hired more artists, Turk and Juvenile—considered one of their best moves.
They placed the new artists with Lil Wayne and B.G. in a group, The Hot Boys, and managed to sign a deal with Universal Record for $30 million in 1998!
Thriving Career
Following Cash Money’s rise to fame, Bryan, or Birdman, teamed up with Mannie Fresh to form the Big Tymers in 1998.
Their first album, How Ya Luv That? set the path for a string of hits!
By 2000, I Got That Work delivered fan favorites like “Get Your Roll On” and “#1 Stunna,” earning platinum status.

When 2002 rolled around, Hood Rich took things up a notch, featuring Grammy-nominated single “Still Fly,” which peaked at number 11 and secured another platinum plaque!
Soon after the duo released Big Money Heavyweight in 2003, they went on hiatus and were reunited in 2017 for a live performance.
Going Solo
After Juvenile and B.G. left Cash Money, Bryan stepped up as the label’s public face, releasing his first solo album, Birdman, in 2002.
The album featured many big names like Lil Wayne, T.I., and Toni Braxton, peaking at No.24 on the Billboard 200 and earning a gold certification. His next album, Money (2005), reached No.9.
In 2006, Birdman teamed up with Lil Wayne for Like Father, Like Son. With hits like “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” the album hit No.3 on the Billboard 200 and went gold.
By 2009, Birdman released a new album, Priceless, which included fan favorites like “Money to Blow,” featuring Drake.
Birdman continued to find new talent and launched Rich Gang, signing fresh names like Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan.
The single “Lifestyle” became a breakout hit, while mixtapes like Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt.1 expanded Cash Money’s influence beyond its core roster.
Working Beyond Music
In 2010, Birdman and his brother Slim launched Bronald Oil and Gas, hoping to strike it rich in oil!
Despite claims of making “very good money,” the operation faded, with regulators stating they’d never heard of Bronald!
Fast forward to 2016, Birdman made headlines after an explosive Breakfast Club interview where he demanded “respek” on his name.
The clip went viral, inspiring a merch line featuring iconic catchphrases from the moment.
Personal Life and Controversies
As I mentioned earlier, Bryan’s mother died when he was a child. His father, on the other hand, died in a car crash in 1996 when Bryan was around 27 years old.
Birdman’s family is unusually large, with ten brothers and twelve sisters!
Sadly, one of his younger sisters, Tamara, also died in a car crash in 2006 and his step-brother Eldrick, was killed in 1991 in a case that remains unsolved.
Regarding romantic relationships, Birdman had around eight known relationships, including ones with Keyshia Cole, Trina, Mia Dumas, and Just Brittany.
However, he was officially engaged to Toni Braxton, but cancelled their engagement in 2019. He also has two kids from a previous relationship.

Controversies
Bridman’s career hasn’t been without its share of drama. In 2007, he was arrested in Tennessee for marijuana possession.
By 2009, legal trouble surfaced again when Birdman and Lil Wayne were sued for allegedly using Thomas Marasciullo’s voice without permission on their albums Like Father, Like Son, and 5 * Stunna.
The most public fallout, however, came in 2014 when Lil Wayne accused Birdman of withholding his long-awaited album Tha Carter V.
Wayne’s frustration led to a $51 million lawsuit, disses in mixtapes, and claims of unpaid royalties.
