Crypto is changing the world as we know it one use case at a time

Despite being in its early stages of development compared to more traditional assets, crypto has long ceased to be an enigma or a digital oddity, as was the case only a decade ago. Most people these days are familiar with the concept of digital currencies and what it entails, and many have even found it compelling enough to get into crypto trading.

It’s not in the least unusual for average individuals to monitor the Bitcoin price or include crypto in their portfolios, and we all have that friend or know someone who’s fluent in crypto lingo or trades digital assets for a living.

Even those who don’t particularly agree with what crypto represents or care for this asset class are still familiar with it. Nonetheless, the impact that crypto has had on our society and the changes it continues to elicit are still largely underestimated.

Given that crypto resides in the digital realm and we can’t actually see or touch it, its effects are also somewhat inconspicuous and are often disregarded or downplayed by the general population. But just because something is not tangible or blatantly obvious doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Since its emergence, crypto has demonstrated its potential for disruption, sparking numerous shifts as it progressed and expanded its use cases. It’s not just the financial landscape that has been greatly impacted by the rise of digital assets but nearly all aspects and areas of life – some more than others. So, now is as good a time as any to reflect and take stock of crypto’s trail of transformations.

New Investment Venue

Trading and investing are arguably the most popular crypto use cases. Originally devised as an alternative payment method, digital currencies diverted from their intended course and ended up rising to prominence as investment vehicles, opening up new opportunities for investors to earn a profit and boost their revenues.

As a novel and already highly popular asset class among investors, digital currencies have changed attitudes and perceptions around investing, creating a much more dynamic landscape and increasing many stakeholders’ risk appetite.

Financial Inclusion

In a day and age where digitalization and internet access are more widespread than ever, it might seem surprising that there are still large communities that don’t benefit from access to basic financial services. The global unbanked and underbanked populations amount to 1.7 billion adults, according to the latest statistics provided by the World Bank.

Due to their low entry barriers and decentralized nature, digital currencies may be able to address these shortcomings and foster financial inclusion and economic growth in developing countries that have a history of recurrent crises, weak fiscal policies and political instability.

Streamlined Remittances

Closely related to the previous point, crypto has also emerged as a game-changer in cross-border transactions, having the potential to transform the remittance space. Transferring crypto between countries is generally faster and cheaper than conventional fiat transactions because there are no intermediaries involved in the process that could slow things down and drive fees up.

Crypto remittances are particularly beneficial for developing countries as they enable residents who work abroad to send money to their families back home safely, thus ensuring their livelihood and supporting the local economy.

Global Trade

Although digital currencies haven’t achieved their initial goal of becoming a mainstream form of payment, an increasing number of merchants from all over the world have started accepting crypto from their customers.

The trend has been picking up pace in recent years, being initiated by major companies like AT&T, Shopify, Subway, and Microsoft and trickling down to smaller enterprises across various industries and niches. As a result, crypto is also making its presence felt in the global trade scene, which could lead to lower currency conversion rates and more efficient transactions.

Blockchain Development

As the most recognized blockchain application, crypto has not only popularized this innovative and highly powerful technology but also fast-tracked its development, enabling its spread across numerous other fields such as supply chain management, healthcare, government, insurance, and so on. All these industries can take advantage of blockchain’s transformative capabilities to improve processes and operations and ensure better outcomes.

Monetary Policies

Crypto’s rapid development didn’t go unnoticed by regulators worldwide. As such, governments and relevant financial institutions have started adapting existing regulatory frameworks to accommodate the newly emerged asset class or drafting specific laws and standards to oversee and regulate crypto assets and all the activities related to them.

Some countries have gone as far as trying to create their own version of digital currencies, also known as Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), to keep up with the development of the crypto pace and the rising demand for these types of assets.

Environmental Implications

Cryptocurrencies have been praised for the various advantages they boast, but they have also been criticized for the role they may play in environmental degradation. Many crypto projects are known to consume vast amounts of energy originating from fossil fuels and thus contribute to global pollution. This has also prompted developers to look for more eco-friendly solutions to power crypto initiatives.

Global Finance

As digital currencies continue to gain more ground in the financial landscape, their influence is bound to increase, which can only mean that every development or disruption taking place in the crypto sphere will also inevitably impact all the other financial markets in a ripple effect and echo around the world. From financial institutions to regulators and payment systems, crypto could disrupt every single component of the economy.

Although the crypto industry is still relatively young, its power and influence in the global ecosystem shouldn’t be undervalued. Exactly how crypto will evolve and what changes it might bring about in the years to come remains to be seen, but things will certainly not stand still.
