Everyone needs sleep, but for many of us, it is easier said than done. Natural sleep supplements can be a key to finding rest without reservation.
Having watched the detrimental effects of medications prescribed to conquer sleep, I have made it my mission to find gentle, effective sleep aids to help my wife and me sleep better.
In researching and experimenting, I’ve found four supplements that seem to really help. These natural sleep remedies, in my opinion, hold the keys to finding better sleep without reservation.
Understanding Natural Sleep Supplements
- Melatonin: This is the hormone that the pineal gland in the brain produces as a result of darkness. Why? It is essential to our internal proper regulation of the body’s clock and circadian rhythm. Supplement forms of melatonin are used to reset the natural schedule of people whose normal sleep timing becomes altered due to jet lag, shift work, or even chronic stress. On average, as a supplement, melatonin is taken about 30-60 minutes before sleep, and it helps decrease sleep-onset time, according to one study.
- Magnesium: This is yet another important mineral utilized in over 300 biochemical reactions within the human body, among them those associated with sleep. Magnesium will relax the musculature and quiet the nervous system. It modulates sedative neurotransmitters such as GABA and other neurotransmitters, which help a person fall asleep. This proves to be particularly useful for older adults and people who have some kind of sleeping disorder called insomnia.
- Valerian Root: Valerian root is an herb being used to a great extent for the treatment of sleep and anxiety disorders, with its roots going as far back as hundreds of years ago, back into folk medicines. It is supposed to increase GABA in the brain, which is the very mechanism of anti-anxiety drugs, most often tested and proven to promote sleep. Valerian root is not as studied as most of the other herbs in this post, but it often tops user ratings when discussing better sleep. However, at high doses, you might feel groggy the next day, so know your amounts.
- Indica Gummies: For those who prefer a holistic approach, the Indica strain is made into gummies. Indica, a strain of cannabis, is typically associated with an entire purpose-built sleep system: sedating, calming, and helping to lull you into deeper sleep. Indica is the opposite of Sativa, which is more energizing and invigorating. Indica strains – known for their rich terpene and cannabinoid profiles – contain higher levels of THC, CBD, and even CBN, exerting anxiolytic and sedating effects, respectively. This, in combination with terpenes such as myrcene – known for its sedating effects – gives Indica its deeply relaxing reputation. It’s known as the entourage effect. Indica gummies are another tool in the natural sleep aid toolkit, offering a gentle nudge toward a restful night.
Tips for Maximizing the Effectiveness of Sleep Supplements
While they won’t ‘cure’ anything, assuming you’re generally healthy and you adhere to a few common-sense caveats, below are some guidelines based on my experience and current studies about getting the most out of these natural sleep aids.
- Follow the Start Low and Go-Slow guidelines. Use the dosages I’ve described as a guide, but start with the very lowest possible amount and then gradually increase until it has the desired effect. For example, a tiny pattern of a few sniffs from a few drops of essential oil intermittently throughout the night. Similarly, begin by taking the smallest dose of a supplement prescribed once or twice a day for two or three days and increase the dosage and /or frequency as needed to continue feeling its effects. This principle also applies to individual herbal preparations.
- Try individual analgesics, like peppermint oil, before or instead of combining several agents into one fail-safe yet highly addictive substance, like the Valium/Diazepam medication I took for two and a half years. Acetaminophen, peppermint, chamomile, and cannabis can each work as well as or sometimes even better than multiple drugs working together in synergy.
- Consider the channels of action. For example, each of peppermint oil, THC, and chamomile can bind to certain GABA receptors in the brain – and drugs that do so seem to be among the best sleep-promoting agents. Likewise, each of these agents can also elevate levels of serotonin in the brain – another neurotransmitter believed to be involved in sleep.
Go low and go slow: Whether it’s melatonin, magnesium, or Indica gummies, start with a low dose and see how your body responds. If it seems to make you drowsy, great. If it doesn’t, you can always try higher doses the next time.
Then you can build up your courage for the biggest question of all: “Is this enough?” Sometimes, less is more, especially with sleep supplements. Overdoing it can have the opposite effect, leading to grogginess or even disrupting your sleep patterns.
It’s important to listen to your body and give it time to adjust to any new supplement. This measured approach will help you avoid potential side effects while gradually finding the right balance for your sleep needs.
Remember, natural supplements may be only one piece of the grand picture. Add good sleep hygiene practices such as the following basic concepts:
- Keeping a regular sleeping schedule
- Avoiding screens before going to bed
- Relaxing prior to bed with a bedtime routine
- Avoid stimulants in the afternoon and evening
These, along with natural supplements, can help you reach that restorative sleep you are looking for. Sweet dreams!
