Previewing the Leading Contenders for the 2026 Belmont Stakes

With the 2026 Belmont Stakes on the horizon, all horse racing fans are preparing for the final leg of the Triple Crown.

This year, the race will once again take place at Saratoga Race Course due to ongoing construction at Belmont Park. As we learned the past 2 years, with the Belmont at 1¼ miles instead of the traditional 1½-mile distance, it makes the race more speed-friendly. We will take an in-depth look at 2026 Belmont contenders, expected pace, and general thoughts in this article.

Potentially set for the 2026 Belmont Stakes are Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, set to battle with Preakness winner Napoleon Solo, whose accomplishments could add flavor to what should be an interesting Belmont final. Racing fans and handicappers have begun scrutinizing replay results, workout reports, fractions, running styles, and pedigree patterns, which race looks most likely to favor.

To bet Golden Tempo vs. Napoleon Solo head-to-head, bettors will need to find an offshore sportsbook that specifically offers horse-to-horse matchup markets, since not every racebook posts those props. Offshore Sportsbooks that offer horse-racing matchups can be found and compared at Oddstrader.com, where bettors can look for offshore books with Belmont Stakes matchup odds.

2026 Belmont Stakes Horse Odds Favorite

Golden Tempo has emerged as the frontrunner for the 2026 running of the Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby-conquering horse skipped the Preakness to point for the Belmont, which most believe will be a lucrative option. Suffering from a slow start, those in the 2026 Derby futures betting side got what they were chasing as the Derby favorite rallied down the stretch to get the victory.

While a lot has been slowed in the Playinc Betting article, perhaps the un-friendliness of the previous 2 races at this track for deep closers. The contest started quicker than many expected, and Golden Tempo was able to prove he can rally no matter the shorter distance down the stretch.

The 2026 Preakness Stakes Champ

Napoleon Solo, on the other hand, has been dancing six straight races in the exacta. When finishing with the victory in the 2026 Preakness Stakes, he became the most accomplished of his contenders. Leaving the field in his dust down the stretch, he defeated next runner Iron Honor by over a length down the straightaway. This stretch is much longer than the Preakness Solange won and could provide trouble for the Derby finish amongst most is between the combo show and the closing Golden Tempo.

Renegade is another horse that is getting some good love going into Belmont week. He was second in the Kentucky Derby and has become one of the more steady of this group of colts. His real gift is that he can do a lot of different things well. He doesn’t need one style and seems to put himself in the perfect spot to win most races.

The Sneaky Contenders

Commandment is finally getting the love he deserves from bettors. Sure, the Brad Cox-trained colt has yet to taste Triple Crown glory, but he can’t be faulted for what he’s done in his last few starts, and there’s reason to believe there’s more to come.

He has a good cruising speed to sit near the pace, but he doesn’t burn himself out early. That could come in mighty handy in a Belmont without a rocket-pace scenario. If the favorites take a trip or are forced to go wide and launch a bit early, Commandment could be there to pick up the pieces.

Chief Wallabee is one of the more under-the-radar contenders in the field. The Bill Mott trainee has gotten progressively better all spring long, and he looks to be really coming into his own now that the races are getting longer.

I have seen reports that Emerging Market has been working very well going into his next start for Chad Brown. His starters almost always get pretty well hyped amongst the race-calling community when they run at Saratoga, and some of the players are thinking this one will offer more value than his two runs suggest.

The Horse Who Can Win This Thing

You’ll have to wake up pretty early in the morning to find anybody touting the chances of Iron Honor. Although he was defeated in the Preakness, he handled himself quite well in the safety of Gulfstream Park, especially in his showdown with Napoleon Solo. What can’t be discounted with this horse is his courage.

He’s not simply a need-the-lead type in order to run to the best of his ability, but he can certainly lay close if need be, and he has the wherewithal to keep on chugging away if the pace isn’t severe. Those are the kinds of runners I like quite a bit taking out mutuals at the Spa.

The great Golden Tempo seeks to finish an unbelievable Triple Crown season, and he’ll face stiff competition from the aforementioned Napoleon Solo, along with more than a couple of very good horses in Renegade and Iron Honor. All of the pieces are in place for the 2026 running of the Belmont Stakes to be perhaps the biggest horse racing event of the summer of 2026.
