The Importance of Network Nodes in Blockchain

Application area

The engine of any blockchain network is applications, including decentralized applications (DApps). It is thanks to them that the exchange of various blockchain assets is carried out and its independent and secure functioning is ensured. At the same time, both application developers and blockchain users use network nodes.

Let us recall that the concept of “node” means any device that is an active part of the blockchain network and that is involved in the implementation of various tasks of this network. In most cases, such tasks focus on processes associated with creating data, storing it, and exchanging it with similar nodes.

In professional terms, the use of blockchain nodes implies their deployment by developers or users, either as their own infrastructure or as infrastructure received from suppliers. At the same time, application developers or network participants who communicate with suppliers have the opportunity to select the category of nodes for access: public, shared, or dedicated nodes.

Network testing and node deployment

Most projects must interact with one or more blockchain platforms to operate. Such interaction through network nodes is quite complex from a software point of view. In order to guarantee the functionality of the nodes, the network undergoes mandatory testing using Testnet. As a result of testing, developers receive information about problems, allowing them to adjust their products. After successful testing, blockchain networks enter the market and can be used by users.

Testnets are divided into two types: stimulating and non-stimulating. When using stimulating Testnets, part of the tokens is allocated in advance as a reward to those users who participate in testing. In non-stimulating Testnet projects, there is no mention of rewarding users, but in most cases, those users who took part in testing still receive some form of gratitude.

Deploying a node as software leads to the fact that through the network, this node finds similar nodes, synchronizes with them, is included in the process of obtaining the entire transaction history, and after that, can begin its participation in the operation of this network. Since the nodes do not trust each other, they carry out constant activities to validate the correctness and relevance of transactions.

Any fraudulent transaction will be verified and rejected by the nodes, and this process ensures the security and continuity of the blockchain network. There are no restrictions on the number of nodes in the network. But it is obvious that the more nodes work in it, the higher the level of its decentralization, the more powerful it is in itself, and, therefore, the more it is attractive for users.

In parallel with the constant implementation of transactions, the network also maintains a database that stores the history of all transactions, starting from the very first one up to the current moment. And it is the nodes that include transactions in blocks, which are then attached sequentially to each other and form that same network chain.

Different blockchain networks take different amounts of time to form one block; accordingly, there are faster and slower blockchain platforms. However, in absolutely any blockchain network, the node is the component that certainly supports the operation of this network.

Motivation for deploying your own nodes

Many people are of the opinion that the biggest motivation for deploying your own node in any blockchain network is to participate in the issuance of cryptocurrency or receive the tokens themselves. However, this opinion is not entirely correct, since participation in maintaining the blockchain network is also a good motivation for deploying your own nodes.

We can list several motivational positions for the user to install the appropriate software on his equipment and turn it all into a node of the blockchain network. The first motivational factor is independence. If the user has his own node, he not only takes part in the operation of the blockchain network but controls it. This means independence from many factors affecting the operation of the network, since the user himself is in direct contact with the blockchain network without any intermediaries.

The second motivational factor is the participation of network users in voting. In some blockchain networks, only the owners of their own nodes can take part in user voting for the decision to issue new corresponding tokens, all other participants are forced to obey the decisions of the voting majority. The third motivating factor is to earn certain commissions.

The point is that in some blockchain networks, there is a fixed commission amount. It is a certain percentage of the transfer amount but cannot exceed a certain maximum value. The developer can`t receive this commission amount, and it is not collected in some separate wallet. It is sent to forgingers, that is, those node owners who maintain the blockchain (install blocks in the chain).

However, it should be noted here that to receive such a commission, the forger must have a certain set amount in his wallet. It should be noted that several more motivational factors for deploying your own node are specific to the specific blockchain platforms.
